We start our day with a sugary, caffeine filled coffee, followed by a soda for lunch and even more caffeine at dinner. Many Americans are in a constant state of dehydration. It’s more than just quenching your thirst, it’s essential to your body’s operations.
Around 60 percent of the human body is water, which means ever cell in your body needs water to work properly. When it doesn’t get it, your organs and tissues cannot function at their best level, leaving you tired and depressed. Did you know that proper hydration not only supports your bodily functions, it also:
- Boosts your energy levels
- Improves your focus
- Elevates your mood
- Helps with healthy skin
- Helps with digestion
But how much is enough? Most of us get nowhere near enough liquids each day. The optimal amount depends on your age, weight, activity level, and where you live. A general guideline is to aim for half of your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 150 pounds, try to drink 75 ounces every day.
Start by adding several glasses of clean water to your day. If you don’t like plain water, add some fresh or frozen fruit for flavor. Remember, caffeinated beverages such as sodas or coffee are not hydrating. Try choosing foods that contain a large amount of water, such as watermelon, celery or cucumbers.
As you increase your water intake, notice the color of your urine. It should be pale yellow or even clear if you are properly hydrated.
